Inaugural Carers Group Meeting 17th October 2019
It looks like we will be able to recommence a Carers Group in Bungendore. The staff at Bungendore Medical Centre organised a meeting with afternoon tea to coincide with Carers Week.
A small group attended the first meeting and those present were clear they would like to maintain a new Carers Group for Bungendore and District. Further meetings have been organised for November and December.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday 14th November at 2pm in the meeting room at Bungendore Medical Centre. As the group expands and becomes more independently run, the group members themselves may initiate dates and times.
We know there are carers who also hold down jobs. We know there are young carers who may be at school and also young parents caring for children with illness and disability. Importantly, there are also carers who need time to prepare ahead to even get out to a meeting. Because there are so many carers and so much diversity amongst those who are doing the caring , our Carers Group will also evolve and be as flexible as need be.
At this inaugural meeting our newly acquired and very experienced medical social worker, Kenneth King answered many questions that the group put to him. We agreed that we would make our second meeting in November following the same brainstorming format, and , since there may be more and different carers attending on that date, we will be able to set up a program of talks and speakers that are relevant to the group.
Some topics that came out of today's discussion included:
Negotiating the IT platforms of NDIS and My Aged Care
Carers Allowance
Emergency Care particularly if something happens to the carer
Distinguishing the differences between the providers and packages
First Aid for Carers
